What prompted the Making Room conversation at JUC?  How did we get to this point of examining whether our congregation should look for a larger space in our part of Jefferson County?

To answer these questions and bring everyone up to date on the Making Room conversation, Board of Trustees members and Rev. Wendy presented an informational briefing between services on Sunday, March 4th. You can watch the presentation below. It includes JUC membership and visitor numbers, a timeline of JUC’s facility history, a financial snapshot, growth figures of other metro area UU churches, limitations of our existing campus that preclude its expansion, and a map of the potential search area.

As you will see in the video, every speaker urged every single member of the congregation to get engaged in this conversation.  After all, it’s the congregation that will make the decision whether to pursue a larger space at a Special Congregational Meeting on April 15th.  Please use the time between now and then to read more about Making Room on this website, offer your questions and comments under the Conversation tab, sign up for forums to dig deeper into this conversation, and attend the Stewardship meeting with our outside financial consultant on Sunday, March 11 at 12:30 p.m.

I am excited to learn that JUC has started the work and discussion leading to a decision on how to deal with our congregation growth, Our "home" cannot be expanded and we need to move, in my opinion.

I support the Board's and staff's efforts to inform us congregants of the issues, needs, possibilities and costs as we move forward.

This is the largest UU church I have ever been a member of and I love all aspects of our Congregational life. My recommendations follow:

1. Make this new site accessible to Transit
2. Provide for more room inside and out for the Sanctuary and RE, including the sanctuary. This needs to meet current needs and to be able to grow as we could well reach 1000 members in years ahead
3. Provide room for rent to others when we are not using it.
4. In addition the Board should make sure that we pay our staff at rates that the UUA approves of, and
5. Lets work hard to find the property and building that will suit us now and long into the future.

As a former UU church and District Board Member I understand well the issues and opportunities that are before us.
