Consultants Kay Crider and Rachel Maxwell capped a three-day weekend of meetings with JUCers with a presentation on the Making Room conversation.  It included financial and organizational data – as well as info on all the processes involved – that could be useful in deciding whether to look for a larger space.

Kay listed the results from a recent survey of members that revealed opinions on several topics, including JUC’s strengths (#1: ministers and staff) and challenges (#1: facilities).

She also clarified the possible two-vote process:
  • Vote One, April 15th, asks if the congregation is open to moving.
  • A yes vote would instruct the Property Evaluation Task Force to continue looking for a property that would help JUC fulfill its mission.
  • A feasibility study would begin to project how much JUC could raise in a capital campaign.  (Rule of thumb: congregations can raise three to five times their annual pledges for a capital campaign when paid over 3-5 years. In JUC’s case, that translates to raising $2.4 - $4 million. We also currently have $2+ million in equity in our campus.)
  • Then, and only then -- if a property under consideration was deemed both wonderful AND affordable -- would there be a second vote on whether to purchase it.

A multitude of other details were presented, which you can see in the video of the full presentation. You can also view any or all of the questions that were asked and answered after the formal presentation. There’s lots of see and think about.  Explore and enjoy!!

I support this effort! I write/say those words since it means if the vote is to go, we leave behind a place so full of memories. AND, we take those memories with us, with space to welcome more people to make memories with us.
